Ask HN: Could a "social mode" in AI chats replace social media?

12 points by amichail 2 days ago

The idea is that, while chatting with an AI, you could temporarily enter social mode.

In social mode, the AI learns from what you say and may tell other humans about it while chatting with them.

So in this sense, the AI provides a form of indirect communication between humans.

Do you think such a "social mode" in AI chats could replace social media?

Part of the problem with social media is getting noticed/finding community (at least on X). Maybe if the AI finds you interesting enough it could help broker connections to other people... I can't tell if this would be weird and terrible or if it would be nice.

I could believe it supplements, but I do not think mediated communications will replace.

I could believe it does autotranslate on the fly. I would enjoy having more nuanced conversations with people in economies where their ESL is low and I do not speak their native language.

It has to be its own product and feature. No way would people want this in ChatGPT.

Like a group chat?

Only the AI would see what you say though. It may or may not tell some other people it chats with about it. And even then, it probably won't quote you word for word.

Yes, I think so. At least I'm working on a project like that and I have been enjoying using it myself in place of having social media apps.
